I. Introduction In the past few years, the European Commission has, in its Reports on Romania’s progress towards accession, regularly identified State aid control as one of the ‘problem areas’ which could possibly give rise to a delay in the closure of the accession negotiations and – once they have been duly closed – even of the date of accession.
