Montenegro is one of the Balkan countries currently negotiating EU Membership. Accession negotiations with Montenegro started in June 2012 and in total 20 chapters out of overall 33 negotiation chapters have been opened for negotiations, among which 2 chapters were already provisionally closed by May 2015. The paper is particularly concentrating on the negotiation status as regards the chapter for competition policy and looking at Montenegro's challenges firstly to fulfil all criteria arising from the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) in the field of State aid and secondly to reach benchmarks defined in the Screening report' from June 2013 to open the Competition chapter for accession negotiations.
