This article deals with public funding for research infrastructures and its assessment under EU State aid rules. Under EU law, State aid is in principle prohibited and may only be authorized if it is in line with EU State aid rules. Public funding for research infrastructures could constitute State aid and in consequence be subject to State aid rules. The principal challenges in assessing whether or not it is the case are the proper identification of “economic activities”,
